For you to put a pet in your HoM does it have to be level 20?

Early days I gave each of my heroes a different pet and ran them all as x/rangers, till we all got to lvl 20.

More recently I go after the wurms of eye just outside boreas station, using an xp boost scroll and doing them in hard mode soon got them to 20.
I set the pet to passive and beat up the wurms myself.

Black Moa and Black Widow spider come as lvl 20 already and the former is easy to get.

Just put comfort animal on your bar and play regularly. Dead pets still get XP, at the price of one skill slot for a while, you'll get a lvl 20 pet sooner than epected, and will still have progressed elsewhere

Sadly, this was a waste of scrolls, since they do not affect pets. Killing level 30 wurms in HM is probably the fastest way to level pets other than death leveling, but you do not need to spend money on scrolls while doing it. (Unless you want to boost your own XP for Survivor, of course.)

Oh well I had a lot of scrolls stored up and only used half a dozen so it cost me nothing.
I should have checked that before I acted.

As Iuris said, just carry your pet around and get on with the rest of you HoM points and it'll soon level up

I think there is a cap to the XP gain per kill which is reached with approx 10 levels difference.

If you are just looking for any pet, bring a wolf companion on a PvP char to the menagerie, show it to the tamer, then return with your PvE char and have Wynn conjure up a level 20 wolf.

Yes, which is why the snow wurms in HM are such a good way to level. Since the wurms are level 30 in HM, the pet never hits the cap until it reaches level 20, at which point the cap doesn't matter because you're done.
